The law, in plain English

Unpaid wages, unpaid holiday pay and unauthorised deductions are claims for unlawful deduction from wages. Employment tribunal claims are free to issue but carry strict time limits: generally three months less one day from the deduction, and you must notify ACAS for early conciliation before claiming. County court is an alternative where limits have passed.

How it usually goes

  1. Raise it in writing with your employer: payslips and contracts do most of the work.
  2. Start ACAS early conciliation promptly: it pauses the clock and is free.
  3. No settlement: a tribunal claim; many employers settle once the claim is real.
